One of the Adelaide's Oldest Childhood Preschool

The Halifax Street Children’s Centre & Preschool is one of Adelaide’s oldest early childhood facilities, boasting a history spanning over 116 years. Originally known as the Keith Sheridan Free Kindergarten, the facility was built in 1925 in O’Brien Street to provide care and education. It transitioned to integrated child care and preschool under the Commonwealth Child Care Act

Our History

The Halifax Street Children’s Centre & Preschool is proud to be one of Adelaide’s longest-standing early learning communities, with a history spanning more than 116 years. For generations, the centre has provided children with a nurturing environment where they can learn, grow, and develop a lifelong love of discovery.

From Humble Beginnings

Originally known as the Keith Sheridan Free Kindergarten, the centre was established to provide accessible early childhood education and care for children and families within the local community. In 1925, a purpose-built facility was constructed in O’Brien Street, creating a dedicated space where children could thrive through learning, play, and meaningful relationships.

Growing with Families

As the needs of children and families evolved, so too did the centre. Throughout its history, Halifax Street has embraced progressive approaches to early childhood education, continually adapting its programs to provide the highest standards of care and learning. This commitment to innovation ensured the centre remained a trusted and valued part of the Adelaide community.

Continuing the Tradition

Today, Halifax Street Children’s Centre & Preschool continues to build on its rich heritage while embracing contemporary early learning practices. Guided by our values of Nurture, Inspire, Community, Excellence, and Respect, we remain dedicated to creating a welcoming environment where every child feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.
